The Time Traveller & Weena
Jun. 17th, 2023 01:45 amI'd been having a fun time recreating H.G. Well's Time Traveller and Weena in Pathfinder (and I want to make more book characters because I can't find any online). The Traveller was fairly easy to make with little divergence from the OG.
(This will probably be jibberish to most, but there's some context here.)I made him a Human Inventor Class with the Chronoskimmer Archetype and a Tinker Background.
I actually decided to try to make a character based off of him in the first place because I saw the Chronoskimmer Archetype and it made me think of him. Inventor then makes sense as the base Class. But, I suppose I should have given him the Construct Innovation and made it the time machine rather than giving him the Weapon Innovation—but I just love the part where he tries to fight the Morlocks with a lever from the museum. I was also entertaining the idea of throwing Alchemist in there, but decided he could just carry Lesser Alchemist Fire bottles rather than needing to be able to create them (though something down the line in Inventor might grant alchemical crafting; it's a crafting heavy class).
Weena was harder to think through. I wanted something that had a lot of aiding abilities, but I didn't want to go Cleric because I don't think the Eloi have religion. So I was thinking Bard, or Druid and ended up choosing Druid because Bard is too worldly. Druid also goes thematically with Weena's flower themes. So Leaf Subtype Druid is pretty cool for her, especially with Goodberry and Magic Fang since The Traveller has some Unarmed attacks 👍
Now, here's the contention that has me typing this up at 2am after I woke up to go get some water then couldn't go back to sleep because I was thinking it about it again.
I was at the library earlier today and I spotted a comic book of The TimeMachine. I thought to take a look at it to see if it might give me more ideas for Weena and what I saw inside shocked me. The Eloi and Morlocks were basically depicted as cavemen, with the Morlocks walking on all fours. I was so baffled. Weren't they SMALL? Weren't they small????
I had to figure that out later though as I had other things to do at the moment.
So rn at 1:something AM I'm searching around online and I find this image

In which, okay she's small, but that's like a 12yr old child not like Hobbit-sized like I was thinking. Further reading the wiki page this image is hosted in I see that there's a lot of fanfiction continuation stories people have written where the Traveller and Weena are romantic and get married and have kids and stuff, and okay—but y'all remember she was like gnome sized??? right???
But no! I find the cover for one of those stories and she's a hot adult blonde lady!! "This had to come from the movies," I think, and I'm right. Even some Weena's from other film media just look like cavewomen. I do give the Wishbone Weena a pass though because at least she looks interesting and weird and is not just a sexy young blonde woman. I'm frankly appalled. Perhaps I imagined them too small, but whatever, I'm right—
I had already made Weena a Hillock Halfling. And it's perfect for her. Both because of the healing from eating which matches the Eloi's lazy decadence and the penalty to strength Halflings get. And I just gave her Herbalist as a Background instead of as a full Archetype because the feats were meh to me.
I'm just still shocked that some media depicts Weena as a fully grown sexy blonde lady. And I get it, we love Weena. So if they wanted romance they had to make her look adult, but ALSO SEXY? ALSO SEXY? smh. The Eloi and Morlocks weren't simply cave people. I'm questioning my memory so hard now though (I guess that's why this is so upsetting, because I was so sure they were tiny people!) And now I have to revisit the book even though I read it less than a year ago. Thanks for nothing Hollywood :^\
