RAM and Server Garbage

The RAM shortage, which I'm sure people have been hearing about (if you haven't -- AI corporations have already purchased all the RAM that will be made by chip manufacturers in 2026 for datacenters that don't exist yet to fulfill uncertain demand for AI, causing a shortage for everything else that uses RAM, which is... essentially everything, because aside from your game systems, and your personal phone and computer, are also used in non-Ai datacenters that keep online services running, and also every point of sale device, and also in a whole lot of systems that one would not think would use it, like various medical machines etc., because it's easier for devs to just stick software into a Microsoft/Android/etc base than to develop whole new machines, essentially) has gotten me a bit freaked out. It just seems to converge perfectly with the restrictions of all sorts of online services that want to slurp up all your personal identifying information and the only sort-of-not-really-viable-alternative is "make your own server", the parts of which are set to become exponentially more expensive even if you have the know how.

I want to try to get a raspberry pi and set up a server. I'm unsure what I'm going to run on it, but it seems like as good a time to start as any. I was actually going to run out today and grab one but there was a sudden snowstorm that was legit terrifying so I'll probably wait until this weekend. If anyone has any recommendations on how to do this, that would be great. What I want to do is not set in stone but I was thinking of trying to run a matrix instance or a VTT or maybe a blog or static website. I don't know. It just seems like something I should start learning probably.

lil' funny my very real 2 year plan is 'peace out (of so many things) and literally become a bog hag hermit'

i've been slightly joking about going through a midlife crisis but uh, this is suspiciously resembling the 'buy a boat and peace out to the middle of the gaddamn pacific ocean' stereotype some engineers have.... :D;;;;

that said i do think this is going to -oddly- be a lot better for mental health since it's actually a bigger/more varied space than where i'm holed up currently (and i've been on a trending positive upswing of self-improvement even here over the last five years; think the key really is discipline in tackling areas of life where one's unhappy and trimming out the deadweight).

it's also interesting to reflect how there's always been a major life change about every 5 years for me; high school, college, the pre-covid first five years of work, the current stint.

lord, i'm ready for the next one. it's going to be busy for a while.

The Whole Truth by Kit Pearson and its sequel And Nothing but the Truth are a pair of middle grade historical novels set in British Columbia in the 1930s.

The main character is Polly Brown, who begins the story age ten, relocating from Winnipeg to the Gulf Islands to live with her grandmother following the death of her father—an event that's the subject of secrecy between her and her older sister Maud. Shortly after arriving at their grandmother's, Maud leaves for boarding school, leaving Polly to adjust alone to her new life on a small island and deal with the carrying the secret by herself. The second book picks up a couple of years later, when Polly also needs to leave the island for secondary schooling and struggles to adjust to being away while more big changes come to her family.

I read a few of Kit Pearson's books as a kid, and when she came up in conversation recently with a friend, I decided to check out some of her more recent novels. I don't know how her older books would hold up to a re-read for me, but I ended up having a mixed reaction to these two.

They were largely pleasant reads. They're well-written, and if spending time in upper middle-class circles in 1930s western Canada appeals, there are a lot of detailed descriptions of clothes, food, and rural seaside life to enjoy. As someone with an interest in that part of the world but who doesn't have family history there, I appreciated this look into the period.

These books feel like they're in the tradition of Anne of Green Gables, Pollyanna, A Little Princess, Heidi, etc.—stories I associate with girls changing the world around them, whether through action or because of their positivity. But that's not really the deal with Polly, who's a very passive character and doesn't seem to bring anything unexpected to her new community. It's also not a Secret Garden or Goodnight, Mr. Tom situation where it felt like Polly herself was changed by her new home, aside from benefiting from more money and opportunities. Things just kind of work out for her while the least dramatic version of eventful situations unfold around her.

I think what particularly didn't land for me was this sense of complacency with regard to the arc of the moral universe. Polly is shown recognizing injustice and then just...never does anything about it. Her grandmother racially discriminates against a neighbour, and Polly disagrees but then lets it lie. We don't see her ever interacting with the neighbour, or even with the neighbour's son, who's a schoolmate. She has the instinct to give money to a homeless man, but then stops when her teacher scolds her and doesn't help anyone again. She never takes a stand or makes any sacrifice, aside from the one time when it's strongly self-serving, but other characters praise her for seeing the world clearly with her artist's eye, in a way that implies that just seeing is enough and that things will work themselves out over time (at least for those who happen to be the loved one of someone with money and property).

While I was reading, I often found myself thinking how glad I was that the author was avoiding the most predictable conflicts I kept thinking were coming, but by the end of the second book, I looked back and felt like something critical was missing. I don't need big culminating moments in historical coming-of-age novels—I absolutely love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and could write a whole essay on how it shares a sliver of the same flaw but how all of its positives outweigh that for me—but I needed just a little something more to care about these characters and their fortunes.

I think I will try to use present tense when I'm recording my voice memos and see what happens, because even as I'm speaking I'm remembering stuff and maybe it'll help.

Mug Retrieval/Giveaway:

Aunt M wasn't happy with his guy. She looked at him, peeved as she threw a small coffee cup in the trash. It was my mom's Christmas themed one with a reindeer on it IRL. I thought it was a waste and took it out to donate, but I stopped and decided to give it to Aunt S because it had a black cat on it. As I handed it over I saw it had changed into a tall mug, white with a blue design at the top and bottom and a black cat, so I thought she would like it (she calls herself a crazy cat lady). I made sure to tell her not to let Aunt M see it at all. Something about looking for an AC after this?

Dub:

Watching an English dubbed samurai movie and complaining about the bad dub. Someone said 'did you know it was done by the people who made _'. They were doing a movie at the same time and were called in to do the dub. I feel like it was the Stranger Things group, I remembering seeing Hopper.

Internet Age:

I was talking to Aunt K about how I regret having internet so early.

Someone was investigating something and tangentially went through our internet logs

I mentioned tumblr and a fandom I can't remember. I said something like 'it must've been crazy seeing the stuff from when I was in _ fandom", they seemed to agree.

IRL I was on the internet before 12 but it was on a timer and open door bedroom. I got my own PC at 13 though and welp.

Fragment: Talking about this method where you can post a video on YouTube and not have it monetized, it's a way to get out an important topic so it's seen better?

Fragment:
I'm putting away a big pot of spaghetti, half of it was made like the day before, the other bigger half was fresh. I wondered if that was safe.

In the stage version of Christmas Carol Goes Wrong, Chris canonically refuses to keep the Cornley Playhouse heated, and everyone complains about how cold it is. It seemed like a great excuse to write self-indulgent fanfiction!

As this is based on the 2025 stage version of Christmas Carol Goes Wrong, be aware that some details may not match up with the original 2017 television version.

The title's not great, but the only other thing I could think of was Baby, It's Cold Inside, which would be considerably worse.

Title: Backup Heating
Fandom: The Goes Wrong Show (well, technically Christmas Carol Goes Wrong)
Rating: G
Pairing: slight everyone/everyone
Wordcount: 1,600
Summary: During rehearsals for A Christmas Carol, Chris won't allow anyone to use the heating. Clearly, the Cornley Drama Society is just going to have to huddle for warmth.

Titre : Les vélos rouillés
Auteur : Gérad Pussey
Langue : français
Type : nouvelle jeunesse
Genre : société

1ère parution : 1997

Kiddie book about an odd friendship between an old rich grandpa and a young boy trying to help his unemployed dad.

Mysteries of the Universe, I guess?

Weird Question Department- did anyone send me something in the mail around the end of last month? There's a tracking number in the system that scanned once at a sorting center and then has never been seen again. Unfortunately, the system also only has the tracking number, no origin point, and no actual image of the label so we're not even sure whose it is. I can't think of anything unaccounted for! (Not the KS I thought it might be.)

Also mildly convinced there's something going on/I'm supposed to have done by tomorrow but also nothing comes to mind. I have a busy week next week, but this week is pretty open. But it's also Fat Tuesday and the Lunar New Year so perhaps my brain is trying to juggle those in.

Other than that, work last night wasn't ridiculous but I hadn't slept well, so I pretty much deflated early but slept decent. I did get runners checked for both Star Abyss kits so I'm just going to count the entire day as a win anyway, lol. I'll keep working on the Destiny Astray when I have the brain power, and I grabbed a battered KO GM to poke at otherwise.

Episode 10: Sakamoto ranked 3rd amongst vampire hunters, I'm so curious who 1 and 2 are.

So Sakamoto survived the attack (after realizing he doesn't want just anyone to suck his blood lol).

What was that weird symbol Ranmaru made with his hand to Rihito. 😂 And I love how both Aoi and Rihito were blushing at Ranmaru draping himself over Rihito.

Nice moment between Kaoru and Franken.

Eh, so the blond is named Nagayoshi and he's Ranmaru's brother?? Does Nagayoshi dye his hair, can vampires?

So Nagayoshi died and changed first after telling Ranmaru to run but Ranmaru got caught anyway.

Vampires age when they don't drink good blood?

Nagayoshi is mad because Ranmaru killed Nobunaga/didn't turn him into a vampire. WTF is he wearing under his clothes? Giving me Fifth Element vibes.

Ranmaru: "I didn't want to turn him into an ugly monster like us."

Oh, so it was Nagayoshi who killed Ryouma.

It's too bad the manga isn't licensed and only up to chapter 6 is translated, I keep wanting to go see what the latest chapters are like. There are 12 volumes.

I was going to try and finish this entry with the rest of the episodes but a lot happened in 10 and it won't all fit for sure;;

The 2026 Three-Sentence Ficathon is now at an end! Still open to fills, but there are no new prompts being posted. Here's an eighth and (probably) final roundup of my fills; once again, all of these are for The Goes Wrong Show.

Assorted ficlets for the Goes Wrong Show, 1,400 words total. )

And that's the end of this Three-Sentence Ficathon! It's my favourite fandom event of the year, and this year in particular I've had an incredible time with it. I ended up writing fifty-six fills, totalling just over ten thousand words; fifty-two of those fills were for The Goes Wrong Show, because I have a problem.

Thank you to everyone for your prompts and comments and fills! Thank you in particular to anyone who read my Goes Wrong Show fics without being familiar with the series; a couple of people even checked the show out because of my fills, which absolutely delighted me. My main goals were to have a good time and spread Goes Wrong propaganda, and I think I've succeeded in both.

💤 Dream Check-in

bluapapilio: The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (sleep of reason)
[personal profile] bluapapilio
They say it's better to write the dream in present tense to help your mind remember it better but by the time I've typed it up, I've remembered about all I can. I think it's supposed to be if you actually wake up and write the whole thing down, but I always do keywords and quotes then type it up later. I'll put a pin in the idea though.

I'll give my friend from this dream a pseudonym or something if I dream of her again.

My sleep is so bad right now it's a wonder I remember anything at all, but I'll take it!

Dream: A lady I've made friends with at the office building I work in got asked on a date and as a favor switched cubicles with her friend, I don't remember what it was about now. Her new cubicle was in the section second now instead of the third and was much smaller than her old one. She said it was a permanent move. I thought she looked like she'd lost weight and her hair was up instead of down like usual, but when I looked away and back I noticed her thighs were big.

I was shaking out the vacuum cleaner and a cloud of multiple layers of dirt, dust etc fell out and clouded the area. My friend didn't notice as she was talking away on the phone after getting a call while we were talking.

The guy she was going on a date with's name was something like 'Lee Kim' (lmao totally comes from the manhua I'm reading, it's literally the couple's last names). It was her friend on the phone she was talking to and my friend was asking her what the favor was(?).

I went to get a broom and dustpan and I kinda go into this scene were there are two garages, one open one closed. Outside, stuff that I recognized from my friend's cubicle was flying around (not her stuff IRL) and I was worried it would fly away, so I tried to put it into the garage and I shut the door a little bit. Then it was like a redo scene (have had these before, it's like a do-over of the scene that plays out different) where it was open again when I came back through for something. I tried to grab a bag and shut it in there. There was a random sock on the ground.

an early note on Winnaretta Singer

i'm in the middle of Music's Modern Muse: A Life of Winnaretta Singer, Princesse de Polignac by Sylvia Kahan, which is fascinating so far. i'm really looking forward to doing a writeup on it once i'm done. tl;dr: it's a biography of this chick who was the Big Lesbian Money in the Parisian music scene during her lifetime; she personally commissioned a bunch of Composers You've Heard Of and had them debut at her salons and such.

and, yeah, as i said, a full writeup will come later, but rn i'm just noting something that struck me / gave me an unexpected Some Kinda Feeling, idk—

this is probably all really banal to ppl who read more history and/or queer theory than me idk lol )
