alaterdate: Belial with a shiny red apple (Belial Apple)
[personal profile] alaterdate

Fighting games were one of my favorite genres of video game ever since I kicked everyone's ass in Mortal Kombat on PS1. For the last few years though (talkin' 5 to 8 here OOF) it's a genre that I haven't really been into. Yet, I still ended up buying Granblue Fantasy: Versus.
The reason? I'm a simp for Belial <3

I honestly wasn't going to get this game. I knew they put Bel in it. He released (ha) in like September of 2020. I knew that and I still didn't get it. But recently someone on twitter posted his opening remarks against Eustace and in seconds I was on another website ordering myself a copy lmao. Then when I got it I bought the S2 character pass (ouch my wallet) so I'm dead set on getting my money's worth out of this game!!

So far I've completed the Tutorial, the Story Mode + a couple floors of the Tower of Babyl, and made it through Arcade mode a few times. No online yet because I don't even have PS+ right now; I haven't used the playstation in a good while. At first the story mode having me make weapon grids was so annoying (please, I don't even like making them in GBF), and I was loathing the idea of grinding for loot, but after working a bit through story mode I think it's a nice addition that will actually keep me coming back to story mode & Tower of Babyl.

What's more is that this game's fighting controls are sooooo smooth. And I love that specials have easier inputs by using R1 with the trade-off that it takes longer for them to refill if you do it that way. I've mostly been training myself to do the long-form inputs anyway, but it's so nice to have the option and is super useful in Story Mode since the characters can turn around on those screens unlike in a match. I think it's the perfect game to get into (or back into, in my case) fighting games!
I've been playing matches against my friend who never really played fighting games and she loves it too. There's even a difficulty system so as I get better I can make the game harder for myself while my friend stays about the same level and it's not a one-sided beatdown.

Another thing my friend and I really like are the opening remarks the characters have against each other. I think they really showcase all the story that Granblue Fantasy has to offer. Some of the remarks being quite friendly or funny is really refreshing too. "It's not all 'grr, I'm going to crush you!'" as my friend put it. We were having a blast pitting characters against each other and my friend has never even played GBF either, but she loved the characters from what she saw.
(She LOVES Metera. And Lancelot and Yuel and Ferry and Belial. But mostly Metera.)

I, of course, love Belial. Also, of course, am dead-set on him being my main. I was worried it wasn't gonna work out between us, but thankfully HE'S FUCKING AMAZING! I love his moveset and his reach. When characters you actually like are hard to use it really sucks. In Blazblue I wanted to be able to use Hazama, but I just could not get his moveset down (I at least had Jin, who I like best anyway, and could kick ass with though).
Belial and I, we fit together perfectly. Haha, but no really, he's definitely one of my favorite characters to use in this game. On the other hand I also love Cagliostro, but am having a bit of a rough time with her. I want her to be my second, so I'm going to keep trying.
Also, whoever decided that Belial's unlockable "weapon" skins should just be a bunch of different sunglasses is a genius and I love them. Mwa! A smooch from me to Arc System Works.

ALSO. Love the English voices and writing! They did such a good job. It's really fun!
