Apr. 30th, 2022 06:00 amThe books currently on my nightstand.
I'm working my way through Kleist's short stories. They are so good. I love Kafka and he loved Kleist and also I love Kleist too now, wow! I can see where Kafka took inspiration, but of course they aren't exactly alike. I've been annotating my copy of the Penguin Classics collection of Kleist's stories and I had a whole argument with the authors of the Introduction, lol. I love annotating. I was reading the stories online, but decided to buy a copy of this book just to annotate it :^p
I'm still working my way through Clive Barker's Books of Blood as well... it's been a while since I read one of his stories so let's officially put that back on the shelf. I'm so bad at reading anthologies.
Then there's THIS BADBOY

It's 1208 pages of prologue to the second and third books in the series lol. It's about two societies, one with medieval weapons, magic and dragons and the other with guns, science, and telepathy for some reason. They come across each other via these mysterious portals that link parallel worlds. These portals are well-known to exist in both societies, but every planet explored had been uninhabited by humans—until this one. This is the first time either society has EVER come across another set of humans, and they promptly try to kill each other đŸ˜”
I'm about 1/4 done. I like it, but most of the text is of course describing things about the fantasy societies that we don't actually need to know to understand the plot, but boy endless worldbuilding sure is cool *pained smile*. (There's a fine line, okay?) My favorite character is Jasak and then of course I like his side of the story better (the medieval people. they are cooler and also they basically have computers with the way they use their magic orbs it's SO FUNNY), but I'm fairly sure they are being set up as the bad guys lol.

Date: 2022-05-04 07:40 pm (UTC)Yeah! It's a chunky book. I'm enjoying it, but the next two volumes are half the size so I'm assuming they're more to the point, which will be more my speed.
I also looked up the publisher because I have a few more books from them that I bought from the library sale and I was curious if they're still around. They're still publishing and all their books still have the fun '90s style covers! If you like this style of content check out the Baen Books website Link
