"It's not illegal."
May. 14th, 2022 11:01 pmIn high school a couple of my favorite books were Les Misérables and Catch-22. Les Mis I read of my own accord (because my favorite musician had a song that referenced it) and Catch-22 I had to read for a class (super enjoyed it, no one else in my group bothered to read it and I had to give them all the quiz answers).
At the time I didn't know Les Mis was as popular as it is. Of course it was a tome of a classic, but I did not know about the musicals (and the Hugh Jackman movie came out after I graduated high school). It was serendipitous for me that I wrote about Les Mis for the essay portion of the AP exam not even knowing of it's popularity and I truly think it factored into me getting full points when no one else did. I digress from why I started writing this post, but I like this story.
So anyway,
I was cleaning out some notebooks earlier and I found fanfiction I wrote for these two books and all I could think to say to that was, "you could write catch-22 fanfiction if you wanted, it's not illegal," before putting the notebook back in the box I found it in. Lol, the embarrassment that came over me. Also I said this to my cat, he did not care either way.
I knew I had some Les Mis ships. Even people who never read the book have Les Mis ships.
But I forgot how much I loved Catch-22's Yossarian, huh? From my notes it seems I really wanted to ship him with Ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen, most likely just because I loved Wintergreen a lot too. But the fic I actually wrote in the notebook was with Nately (Nately? Really? After all the Wintergreen talk?). I also still agree with my teenage self: Ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen needed more scenes because I love that fucker.
I'm also fairly sure I wrote Dorian Gray fanfiction, but I think it was on notepad on the computer so who knows what happened to that file. And I definitely wrote a poem about Gatsby/Nick, but in a jokey way for my friends.
I sincerely forgot about all this. I know I discovered the world of fanfiction in high school, but in my mind fanfiction was for anime and videogames. So writing it about classic novels seemed funny.
Of course now I know fanfiction is for everything!
I think it's time to re-read Catch-22 and see if this Yossarian/Wintergreen idea goes anywhere.
Ever written fanfiction for something you never thought you would? It's not illegal.

Date: 2022-05-17 08:12 pm (UTC)I haven't read it in a while either, it feels so silly to want to dive into it mostly for shipping notes, but it's a good book so another read is warranted for any reason 😂
I just remembered there was a netflix show or something of Catch-22, so I checked AO3, but the only pairing with Wintergreen is Minderbinder, so it's in our hands [salute emoji].
